Nature Memories Cafe @ The Nature Discovery Centre

A series of free weekly drop-in sessions designed to provide support for people living with dementia and their loved ones.

Join us each week to experience the relaxing power of nature through crafts and other activities and enjoy a piece of delicious homemade cake with a hot drink. Don’t worry if you’re not artistic, or would prefer to just enjoy the cake, everyone is welcome!

These sessions are free thanks to generous donations, which mean that the cafe can continue for 2017.

Choose a different craft each week – including:

Bobbin lace friendship bracelets, origami animals and water bombs, simple fabric bunting, finger knitting, kite making, weaving, woodland creatures, fabric collage, hand puppets, felt key rings, miniature picnic baskets.

Cost: £10 per session. Pay for the first 4 sessions and get the 5th session for free.

Family Craft Activity Day @ Shaw House

Fun holiday activities aimed for 4 – 11 year olds but younger and older children are welcome. No need to book just drop in. Shaw House is a Grade I listed building and unfortunately cannot accommodate pushchairs. They have a policy where visitors are asked to please leave push chairs on the ground floor, in the safe area provided. They offer hip seats which are suitable for children from 6 months to 3 years.

Wed 26th July – Wise owls – Make an owl out of a variety of craft materials.

Wed 2nd August –Happy hedgehogs – Make a pom pom hedgehog hanging decoration.

Wed 9th August – Pop-up puppets – Make a pop-up puppet mole.

Wed 16th August – Pebble creatures – Make and paint a mini beast or animal from a pebble.

Come on a Wildlife Safari of the Shaw House gardens with your local Wildlife Trust. Hunt out beautiful and bizarre mini-beasts and help us make them a wonderful bug hotel! Explore the fabulous leaves in the garden; learn how to identify them and make a lovely leaf creature.  Suitable for all ages. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Drop-in for both activities between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

You can take part in both the Go Wild and indoor craft activity at Shaw House for the usual cost of £2 per child. 

 

Wed 23rd August – Beautiful birds – Decorate a ceramic bird hanging decoration – perhaps draw one you’ve seen in Shaw House’s garden or from your imagination.

Mozart’s Last Year, with Kennet Opera @ The Sutton Hall

Mozart died aged 35 in December 1791 and Kennet Opera’s “celebration in song and words” features his opera and choral works from that year, when his creativity was as astonishing as ever. The show won’t just be music – some items will be staged and acted.

Be prepared for the comic, and the sacred – and the magical!

A lively commentary will come from Emanuel Schikaneder (1751–1812), actor-manager, singer and composer, and an associate of Mozart.

Seating is at tables, so bring along your drinks and make believe you’re at a Vienna cafe.

It’s Friday Fun at the museum all summer! (10am – 3pm, £2 per child, For 4-11 year olds but younger and older children are welcome. No need to book, just drop in.)

Friday 28th July – Cave art (part of the Festival of Archaeology 2017) – Do some cave painting on a clay tile using twigs, feathers and other Stone Age-inspired painting equipment. Find out about cave painting and handle a real Stone Age artefact.

Friday 4th August – Go potty! – Make a Neolithic pot from clay using some replica ones as inspiration.  You can then see some local Stone Age artefacts in our galleries

Friday 11th August – Magnificent mummies – Make a mummy out of a clothes peg, modelling clay and other craft materials. Some real Egyptian artefacts will be available to view.

Friday 18th August – Face it! – Make a face out of clay using some replica Medieval and Tudor face jugs as inspiration.

Friday 25th August – Write stuff! – Make a quill from a variety of craft materials and then ink some pictures or try writing with it.

Friday 1st September – Mini masterpieces – Paint in the style of Claude Monet and produce your own mini masterpiece to take home.

 

Dress for mess! Disposable aprons will be provided.

Explore the craft of Nature Writing with RSPB & Wildlife Trust Author, and Nature Notes Columnist, Nicola Chester.

Learn to engage and use all your senses to tune in to the wild world around you, before honing your skills to produce an atmospheric, memorable piece of writing around the beautiful village of Stockcross.

The Workshop will include an introduction to Nature Writing, an exploratory, sensory walk around the village, writing exercises to loosen up and stretch our imaginations and feedback – all in a relaxing, friendly and encouraging environment.

Suitable and tailored to all ages and abilities, families included.

Bring:

  • writing materials – pen or pencils and a notepad (you will need to write notes ‘on foot’);
  • packed lunch, water;
  • you may want to bring: simple ID guides/ binoculars and magnifying glasses/ hand lenses, BUT only if you have them!

Wear: clothing suitable for walking in: comfortable boots or similar, consider long trousers (in case of nettles and thistles) and sunglasses/ hats/ suncream if the weather is sunny, waterproofs if not! We will go ahead unless the weather is really poor. The walk will be a pleasant ramble with frequent pauses.

Sport in the Mind: Table Tennis @ Thatcham Parish

Sport in Mind ® is an independent Berkshire mental health sports charity (unaffiliated to Mind) founded in 2011. Its aim is to use sport and physical activity to help aid the recovery of people experiencing a wide range of mental health problems by promoting mental well being, improving physical health and combating social isolation.

The charity provides a weekly timetable of supported sport and physical activity sessions in Berkshire for people experiencing mental health problems in the community and also those receiving inpatient care at Prospect Park Hospital. Since our inception, Sport in Mind has helped over 7,500 people and delivered in excess of 8,000 physical activity sessions across 18 different sports.

This success has generated national interest and acclaim from healthcare professionals, mental health service users and a multitude of organisations ranging from local authorities to national governing sports bodies. Our work is delivered in partnership with Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, who have supported our work fantastically since our inception as a charity in 2011.

Visit to Rowbarge, Woolhampton Beer Festival @ Rowbarge

A group of CAMRA members will be walking along the Kennet & Avon canal towpath from Newbury to arrive at the Rowbarge, Woolhampton by 1pm.

Walkers can join the group at 11am – Victoria Park, Newbury (where the slope from the library bridge meets the towpath) or at 12 noon – Thatcham (canalside near Thatcham station).

On arrival, look out for the marquee on the lawn between the pub and the river / canal.

NB There will be an opportunity to join CAMRA from the branch’s post at the festival on Saturday. Membership is not required to join this walk / social. All welcome.
